So, there are some things I wish I had done differently with the posing (cause I’m still working on that), but overall, I think this wedding turned out pretty well, and the couple loves their images! The wedding was on Saturday, and since they live out-of-state, I worked most of the morning to get the photos ready for their viewing this afternoon. And it feels GREAT to have it finished already.

I didn’t actually shoot much in Cincinnati. I did learn a few new things though and as a result of Cincinnati I picked myself up a pretty awesome video light. And although I don’t actually use speed lights, I learned some nifty tricks with a koozie and my hand that make speed lights just a little bit cooler. Here are a few fun and random shots that I managed to take (when I wasn’t oh so very hard at work)…

Last night was so much fun! And it was perfect. We couldn’t have hoped for a better turnout. The music was great (thanks Josh Ross!), and it was awesome to share about what we are doing and to share the images from Ecuador. Thank you so much to everyone who came out.

Project Ecuador

We are back from what was the first of many trips to come…

We purchased over a thousand dollars in food for one of the orphanages, 28 mattresses for another, paid to have a leaking sewage problem fixed where kids were playing soccer in sewer water, delivered tons of toys and activities to all of the orphanages we visited, funded a remodeling project at an orphanage that without would have lost their funding and we are paying for additional volunteers throughout the year to work directly with children in the orphanages. There are still a lot of needs; kids still sleeping on floors or two to a small bed, food, plumbing work is needed so that toilet water isn’t spilling out on the sidewalk where kids play, washing machines would make things so much easier, toothpaste etc. Stay tuned to find out how you can help or get involved now at http://dandoamor.com/wordpress.

“Cuando vas a volver?”

“When will you come back?” Those words broke my heart…

I wish I could show you every small and beautiful face we had the privilege of meeting. But I know that you will understand that for safety and legal reasons I can not post recognizable images of the children in the orphanages here in Ecuador on a public site. If we are Facebook friends, I’ll post some in a “friends only” album there, so be on the lookout for that.

If I could, I would pack these children right up and bring them home. Many of them literally run to you with open arms in a desperate search for love, kindness and affection. Some end up in the orphanages because they come from poverty; their families, while loving, are so poor that they can not afford $50 to pay for a lawyer and/or don’t understand their rights and while they are sad, are helpless and separated from their children. Most however, end up in the orphanages because of severe neglect or worse. One little boy recently came to an orphanage in chains that actually had to be cut off of him. And yet, we saw so many smiling faces. They were all soooooo intrigued by the cameras and absolutely adored their photographs. One of the photographers brought a portable photo printer so we were able to leave a photo of every child. Most of them were so eager to play and the difference in language was no obstacle for love and attention. The ratio of nuns to children is high and in no way does every kid receive even just one hug each day. Think about that for a moment… I probably couldn’t even count the number of times I hug my children in a day, but these kids are growing up without anyone to tuck them in at night. Even the babies will sit or lay by themselves for hours without making a peep because there is no one who will come. This is not because the nuns don’t care, but because there are so many children that they barley have time to feed and change each child that it leaves little or no time to play or interact with each of them. “Cuando vas a volver?” he asked.

Short of moving to Ecuador, my time with the children is limited, but there are things that I can and will continue to do to help. It has only been one day and we have several more orphanages to visit this week, but already these kids have a very very special place in my heart.

There are tangible needs that can be met. While at the boys orphanage we learned that the kids are sleeping two to a bed and many on the floor and that soon they would run out of food. They also do not have enough utensils that the kids have to eat in shifts. On Friday we are going to deliver rice, powdered milk (because it can be watered down and last longer), vegetable oil (which is used to increase the fat intake) and other goods to help with the shortage of food. Knowing that these precious children could not have food to eat just makes my stomach sink. And the crazy thing is that a bag of rice that will feed an entire orphanage for a month only costs $35.

Calibration

I really am falling more and more in love with the art of my work. It’s absolutely fun to create images. What is not so fun however, is the technical side of the profession. It wasn’t easy for me to learn how to achieve the right exposure etc. and there is still so much more I’ve yet to learn.

It is absolutely horrid that a beautiful image with great composition and amazing color comes back from the lab looking like a dark mess. I’ve been struggling for some time to achieve the right brightness. For a while things were looking pretty good, but today I received that unpleasant call from the lab saying that my images were quite dark. I didn’t notice a change on my monitor, but I guess the slightest changes can go unnoticed by the naked eye and yet completely ruin an image when you have it printed.

Sigh.

I went out and purchased a monitor calibration tool today. Why didn’t I do that sooner? It’s kind of funny, even the color of this blog is slightly different than I had thought it was.

Now that I’m looking at a calibrated screen, I think I’ve found my signature black-n-white. Check out the images below, hopefully my clients like my black-n-white too.

Finding the light

I recently sold just about every last piece of my old equipment and purchased a new camera, the 24-70 lens that I’ve had my eye on, and some new lights and things.

I learned pretty much all I know about good lighting at a couple of recent conferences and wanted to play around a bit with my lights and exposure. Luckily, I have five of the most adorable models at my disposal and I think I found some great light for each of them…

Although I haven’t posted anything in a little while, I did create a new site. You’ll notice that “www.tiffanielloydphotography.com” no longer brings you to this blog, but takes you to my fancy new flash site. Check it out.

You might also notice the PPI logos here and around my website. I am one of the newest members of Professional Photographers of Iowa. In a couple weeks I’ll be heading to Des Moines for my first PPI conference where I look forward to learning new tricks, techniques and much more. I’ll be sitting in on four days of sessions… which is sure to improve my skills in some way or another… which should be awesome for the weddings and portraits I have scheduled this summer. I’ll be packing a thick notebook. One of the things I am most excited about are the contests. I’ll be entering a few of them and look forward to feedback on a few of my photographs. Plus, I’ll get to see the work of so many other great photographers around the state.

I purchased a new camera on Friday, and I love it. I’m staying true to Canon and went with the 40D. It isn’t the best out there, but it’s a great camera and I am well pleased with the upgrade. My new “toy” comes with an increased shutter speed, more frames per second, a higher ISO range (which I really hope is going to help the results of my low light shooting), longer battery life (always a plus), wireless capabilities, a few other perks and it is compatible with higher level Canons (so I won’t have to worry about wasting money when I purchase accessories etc.). I’m also loving the additional controls, which has made manual mode even more friendly to navigate. I have not used it a ton yet, but I did stay up until midnight the night I got it and studied the owners guide. Whether I ever use all the features or not, I wanted to be sure I know how (and if you know me well at all, reading the directions is not something I do often). I still have my telephoto lens and the new flash I got for Christmas, and I purchased a new wide angle that should arrive tomorrow or the next day, which will be just in the nick of time for my next photo shoot. I took some senior photos on Saturday, and not having the option of a shorter lens was frustrating, though I am pleased with the overall results of the shoot. Here is Keelea…
